Norfolk School recognised by National Award Acle High School has been Commended by the prestigious national Schools ETC Award, which is run by learning charity ContinYou, for its extended services to pupils and the local community. The theme of this year' s Schools ETC Award was 'Enjoy and achieve: putting the smile back into the learning community.' Acle has certainly enjoyed investigating a local Roman fort and learning about their local history. For the past two years, pupils have been unearthing the secrets of the past in a project initiated by Paul Jones, history teacher and former field archaeologist. After exciting finds, including an arrowhead from the bronze age, the project has now expanded to involve the whole community, with practical archaeology classes for adults, mini-digs and introductory sessions for local primary schools. The project has also given rise to open days and 'Ask the Expert' sessions, where people bring along their own finds to be dated. The project was commended for bringing the whole community together by bringing the science of archaeology to life, for everyone. This project is a great example of a school becoming a hub of activity in their local area by creating a catalyst for integration and creative learning. One participant said ‘Not only have I learnt something about archaeology, but I’ve also had the opportunity to get to know people from the village, from school age to OAPs, like myself.' The school is encouraged by their achievement in the national award scheme: Janis Austin, Extended Schools Co-ordinator for Acle High School said: 'I am delighted that the Acle Archaeology Project has been commended by the ContinYou’s schools ETC Award. It acknowledges all the hard work and commitment that has gone in over the years to build such a strong community project that continues to be enjoyed by all age groups within the whole Acle cluster’. |
